Why Feed additives ?
Feed additives play important roles in feed industry
Feed additive is the core of formula feed. In spite of its small amount, ranging from percent to parts per million used in formula feed, feed additive has very important functions which decide the quality of final feed. By the extensive application of feed additives, the breeders can shorten breeding cycles, reduce breeding cost while sufficiently improve the production ability of their animals, which results in conspicuous economic and social performance. We may say that its production and application is an important mark indicating the development level of formula feed processing industry. Without them, there would be no existence of complete feed; therefore feed additive industry has become an essential part in the feed industry system. Especially in the recent 20 and 30 years, with its usage increased largely, the modernization of feed industry has been enhanced and becoming more and more scientific. In the mean time, it also has promoted the intensivism and specialization of stock farming, leading the productivity of breeding raised by a big margin.
Feed additive has various assortments with different functions and effects, its development is fast. So far, there has been hundreds used in the world, with different specifications, not to mention the variety of compounded premixes. The types of feed additives used in Japan has been increased from the number of 44 in 1974 to 114 at present; the number legally posted by European Communities (EC) is upto 250; more assortments are used in US, there are no less than 60 kinds of growth promoters, vermifuges, other simplex feed additives and hundreds of compounds; 6 kinds of trace elements approved by FDA, such as iron, iodine, copper, cobalt, manganese and zinc, and other totally 46 kinds of products. In US, there are more than 13000 feed factories using varied feed additives in their production.
Feed additives are essential substances for contemporary animal nutrition industry
Feed is the material basis of stock farming. It provides the imperative nutritious substance of survival for poultry, fish, shrimp and other precious animals, such as minks, foxes and raccoon dogs, etc. With the enhancement of intensivism and specialization for stock and aquatic farming, livestock and other animals have been gradually kept away from the nature and depending more and more on the feed which provides them the most or even the whole nutritional demands in their lives. The layers kept in farmholding in early days used to ingest natural insects, vegetable leaves, sands and eggshells to obtain requisite nutritious substances like proteins, fats, vitamins, calcium and phosphorus. However in modern henneries, they can only take these substances from the formula feeds provided by human beings. Thus, the realization of complete nutritions for formula feeds must depend on the scientific and reasonable use of feed additives.
In order to meet the requirements of social lives and production, people have been utilizing modern technologies more consciously and purposively, strengthening specific functions and physiologic tendencies of the animals to improve the quality of their products and pursue higher efficiency and benefits. To realize these targets, except for highbred cultivation, strict breeding management, better nutritions in feed and improving feed palatability, the most effective way is to increase feed conversion rate. Adequate supplement of feed additives in formula feeds can improve the productivity of animals while save an amount of protein feed.
